Meet the brands: Carlingue Timepieces

French Creativity Meets Swiss Expertise: Crafting Watches with Vision and Precision

When you discover a new watch brand, the first question is often: What makes it different in the vast sea of the microbrands? In this case the answer lies with its founder, Alexandre Voirin, and his uncompromising dedication to design and craftsmanship.

He is is not a newcomer to the world of horology, but a legendary French watch designer from Besançon whose passion for horology runs deep. Alexandre began his career with Silberstein(as a graphic designer) and later on spent over a decade at Longines, where he helped to create iconic collections such as Dolce Vita, Conquest V.H.P, and Longines Spirit. His talent earned global recognition when he won the prestigious GPHG award in 2017 for the Longines BigEye chronograph. In 2024, Alexandre launched Carlingue Timepieces, a brand inspired by military heritage and structural strength, blending French design with Swiss precision.

He used his experience and connections to bring something new to life. Starting from zero, he built the brand on his own, without big investors or industry groups behind him. This freedom lets him design the watches the way he imagines them, instead of making mass-produced pieces just for profit. Isn’t that amazing? Let’s continue with the brands name!

The Story Behind the Name and Its Meaning

When creating a watch brand, choosing the right name is more than a marketing decision, it’s about identity, philosophy, and the values you want every timepiece to represent. In this case the process began with one essential requirement: the name had to be French.

From there, the search focused on finding something meaningful, a word that carried history, strength, and engineering excellence. Inspiration came from exploring the three great military domains from navy to air force, and infantry, in pursuit of a term that could unite them all.

It had to represent more than machines; it needed to symbolize the core principle behind the watches: robustness and cohesion.

After much thought, one word stood out: Carlingue and the brand was born.

So, What Does It Mean?

Carlingue refers to the structural backbone that holds everything together—whether it’s a boat, an aircraft, or a land vehicle.

  • In Aviation:
It is the central structure of an aircraft, housing passengers and cargo while carrying wings, engines, and the tail. Think of it as the chassis of an airplane.
  • In Naval Engineering:
On a submarine or ship, the carlingue is a reinforcing element of the hull, ensuring stability from stern to bow.
  • For Boats:
It acts as the spine of the vessel, embedding floors and frames for maximum strength.
  • For infantry:
It would be the reinforced framework that holds everything together, basically the backbone of the vehicle.

It represents engineering integrity and structural strength. Just as the carlingue is the unseen yet essential element in machines, the watches are built to be strong, reliable, and timeless.

From Design to Precision

When Alexandre talks about Carlingue, one thing becomes clear: every single element is his creation. Everything is designed by him from cases, crystals, hands, dials, straps, buckles, presentation boxes, even the carrying case. Nothing comes from supplier catalogs.

From the logo and graphic identity to the ergonomics of the cases and the smallest design details, he handles it all personally. This is not a brand that outsources creativity—it’s a true designer’s project from the ground up and that is something rare nowadays and makes this brand a standout from the crowd.

While Carlingue is proudly based in Besançon, the historic center of French watchmaking, the brand’s technical work happens in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. The founder works closely with a trusted partner there, who takes care of the technical side and assembles the watches. The parts come from selected factories in Switzerland and Asia, factories Alexandre has worked with before during his years in the watch industry.

All the watches run on premium Miyota 9000 series movements. These are great for a few reasons: they’re strong, reliable, and beautifully finished with Côtes de Genève. They’re also very precise and thin, which helps to keep the watches slim. Plus, they help keeping the final price more affordable. It is a smart and safe choice for an upcoming brand.

When everything is ready the watches ship in small batches of 20 pieces to Alexandre’s workshop in Besançon. It’s a process that ensures quality control and a personal touch at every stage.

Straps: Comfort Meets Style

Another highlight is the straps, made by a well-known Swiss company that many respected watchmakers rely on for quality. They don’t just deliver on comfort, they truly elevate the overall look of the watches.

Beside that Carlingue also offers something truly unique on the strap market. They have taken a bold step by bringing tattoo art to watchmaking. Instead of skin, the canvas is leather straps, turning timepieces into wearable stories. The designs draw inspiration from classic maritime and military symbols of the 20th century.

Three tattoo artists creates these wonderful straps:

  • Mors with his detailed mandala, a symbol of balance.
  • Alessandro Pennella with Cristo and Il Diavolo, exploring spiritual contrasts.
  • Ghis Melou with a classic Old School eagle, embodying strength and liberty.

Each of them is made from full-grain leather, printed in high definition for a tattoo-like effect, and finished with a soft, hypoallergenic lining. Durable and comfortable, the straps age naturally over time. These straps are available with all the three collections, it is also possible to purchase them as accessories separately.

Notable collections:

Carlingue offers three main collections at the moment: Diver Heritage, Military Heritage, and Aviation Heritage. Each collection includes different watch versions, along with special limited editions capped at 100 pieces. Final thoughts

Carlingue isn’t just another name in the crowded microbrand space. It’s the culmination of decades of experience, a passion project by a designer who has nothing to prove but everything to create.

In Alexandre’s own words:

What I offer is more like watchmaking craftsmanship than mass production.”

This is an impressive debut from an independent brand with a clear vision and a strong sense of identity. It’s inspiring to see the birth of a brand led by a famous designer, bringing together French creativity and Swiss expertise. If this is just the beginning, there’s every reason to believe Carlingue will grow into something truly significant, earning a respected place among the great names of watchmaking.
