Vintage Elegance: The 1940s-Inspired Japanese Watch That Instantly Caught My Eye

There’s something undeniably special about vintage-inspired watches — the way they capture the spirit of a bygone era while offering the reliability of modern craftsmanship. When KUOE released the Royal Smith 90-008, a timepiece rooted in the refined aesthetics of the 1940s, it immediately caught my attention. Elegant, compact, and full of character, this watch isn’t just a nod to the past — it’s a reminder that timeless design never goes out of style.

As a fan of vintage watches, I find it wonderful to have a modern timepiece that captures that classic, elegant aesthetic.

First impressions

I’m always amazed when something travels all the way from the other side of the world—and this time was no exception. Shipped directly from Japan, it landed on my doorstep in under a week, which was a pleasant surprise.

When I opened the box, I discovered a dark brown leather-like case containing the watch. It had a refined yet sturdy look, instantly showing this was something special. Inside, everything was thoughtfully arranged to keep the watch secure while presenting it beautifully. I especially liked the inclusion of a soft microfibre cloth, perfect for keeping it clean and smudge-free. Overall, the unboxing experience felt deliberate and premium, matching the quality of the watch.

Right after unboxing, what caught my eye was the beautiful textured dial. It’s a creamy white color with polished Breguet-style Arabic numbers that are each carefully and individually placed. The applied numbers really stand out and enhance the overall experience, giving the watch a noticeably more premium feel.

Besides that, if you look closely, there’s another unique detail to notice. I love the open design of the 6 and 9 numerals (you can see some macro shots of them in the gallery at the end)—they look really cool. I’m pretty sure this is the first watch in my collection to feature this style.

I opted for the version featuring gold numbers as you can see above, a choice that truly boots the overall aesthetic of the watch. The warm tone of the gold contrasts beautifully with the textured dial, creating a subtle yet eye-catching visual harmony. It’s not an overpowering detail, but one that quietly draws you in the more you look at it. This refined combination enhances the vintage-inspired character of the Royal Smith, giving it a timeless elegance that feels both classic and fresh.

The Royal Smith 90-008 comes with a polished cushion-style case made from 316L stainless steel, paired with an 18mm lug width. Around the back, a screw-down caseback with a sapphire crystal window offers a clear view of the movement.
Powering the watch is the reliable Miyota 9039—a premium Japanese automatic movement known for its slim profile and solid performance. It runs at a smooth 28,800 vibrations per hour, offers a 42-hour power reserve, and maintains an accuracy range of -10 to +30 seconds per day. Well that is what promised by the manufacturer but in fact it keeps much better time than that, around 4-5 seconds/day.

The Royal Smith 90-008 has a 50-meter water resistance rating, which is quite standard for a dressy timepiece. That means it’s perfectly fine for everyday situations like washing your hands or getting caught in a bit of rain. However, I wouldn’t recommend wearing it while swimming or taking a bath. Water could still get in around the crown area, which might damage the movement over time. So it’s best to play it safe and keep it dry whenever you can.

My watch paired with the Bamboo Bonklip bracelet since I already have plenty of leather straps in my collection and the Beads of Rice one was not available.

I have to admit, this is my first time wearing a Bonklip, and wow—it’s seriously cool. The fit is incredibly easy to adjust, and the bracelet adds a fresh, vintage-inspired touch that really elevates the whole package. Love the signed buckle on it too!

Finally, I want to talk about the size, which might give some people a scare when considering this model. At just 34 by 34mm and 11mm thick, it sounds small on paper—but surprisingly, it doesn’t feel that way on the wrist. I’m not exactly sure how KUOE managed this—perhaps the cushion-shaped case plays a role—but on my 17cm wrist, it fits perfectly. I was initially a bit hesitant about the dimensions, but in the end, it works beautifully and wears much larger than expected.

On the downside, there’s just one small thing that stood out to me: the crown. While it’s easy to pull out and operate when setting the time, its slim, tapered design makes it a bit tricky to grip—especially for someone like me with larger thumbs. It’s a minor inconvenience, but definitely something to be aware of.(added a photo of it at the end of the review)

Final thoughts

I truly believe KUOE is a great Japanese brand from Kyoto, offering uniquely designed watches at an affordable price point.

The quality of the Royal Smith is exceptional—especially the meticulously applied Arabic numerals, the textured dial and the beautifully polished cushion-style case. I also appreciate the see-through caseback; while the Miyota 9039 movement is widely used across the industry, KUOE adds a special touch with a nicely decorated finish on the custom rotor, which really elevates the overall experience.

In short, if you’re after a vintage-inspired dress watch that’s stylish yet practical enough for everyday wear, look no further—this Royal Smith 90-008 is exactly what you need.

All in all it is an amazing watch that I wear a lot since I acquired. I find myself quite often staring at it and admiring the dial.
