Breaking New Ground: Casio’s Debut Automatic Watch
Casio just introduced a range of automatic watches from an affordable price point to a higher cost model with carbon fibre dial. The will be released in August.
The reference numbers are below with the main differences:
- EFK-100XPB-1A (combination of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) and stainless steel)
- EFK-100CD-1A (forged carbon dial)
- EFK-100D-2A (blue dial)
- EFK-100D-3A (green dial)
- EFK-100D-7A (white dial)
The stainless steel versions measure 39 mm wide and 43.5 mm lug to lug width with 100 m water resistance.
The watches are powered by an automatic movement that appears to be the Seiko NH35—a well-known workhorse. It’s a safe and sensible choice for Casio, given the movement’s reliability and reputation.
I have to say, I’m really excited about these new watches. This is a big and exciting release from one of the brands I like the most. I’ve always enjoyed what they create, and this new model looks especially cool and well-made.
Now, will I buy one? Honestly, I think the answer is yes. Maybe I won’t get it right away when it first comes out, but knowing how I am, I’ll probably end up adding it to my collection at some point. I might try to hold off for a bit, but I can already feel that pull—it’s the kind of watch I know I’ll keep thinking about until I finally decide to go for it.
I’m curious how longtime fans of the brand will react to this bold new direction—it’s a significant departure from what we’re used to. Another concern is whether Casio stores and service centers will be prepared to handle repairs for these mechanical movements, as they’re a whole different world compared to quartz or solar models.
