I’d like to start with a little reminiscence to explain why this brand is important to me. How it became one of my favorite brand.

I come from a small town in Hungary and there was only one watch shop nearby that sold jut this one brand. Naturally, there were all sorts of variations, but mostly offered lower-end models. We are talking about 90ies in this case. Yep, I am old.

I will never forget how, as a child, we walked to my grandparent’s house every weekend (was about a 20 minute walk), passing by this little shop. Almost every time, I admired the watches displayed in the window. This was still before the internet era(honestly feels like in a different lifetime), so I could only see watches here or occasionaly in TV in some ads.

Naturally Casio became my favourite brand at that time and I share the same passion for their models even today. So let’s talk about the history of the brand. I will try to keep it as short as possible. Have fun reading!

The First Digital Watch: Casiotron

In 1974, Casio entered the watch industry and introduced its first digital watch, the Casiotron. This watch not only told the time but also automatically set the date, which was unprecedented at that time. Its modern design and practical features made it popular. In 2024, the watch will be re-released in a limited edition.

The Pioneering Casiotron X-1

Casio continued to innovate, and in the late 1970s, it introduced the Casiotron X-1, a significant advancement in watch technology. The X-1 offered not only timekeeping functions but also a stopwatch, counter, world time, and dual time zone display. It became the world’s first wristwatch to feature five functions simultaneously. This was made possible by Casio’s proprietary high-density mounting technology, which allowed for smaller, thinner components and greater efficiency.

The G-Shock Revolution

The real breakthrough for Casio came in 1983 with the launch of the now-famous G-Shock series. The first model, the DW-5000C, was an exceptionally durable, shock-resistant watch designed to withstand any environment. G-Shock watches quickly gained popularity, especially among athletes, military personnel, and outdoor enthusiasts.

The key to G-Shock’s success was its extraordinary durability. During the design process, Kikuo Ibe, the creator of G-Shock, envisioned a watch that could withstand falls, shocks, and extreme conditions. The series’ popularity has remained strong ever since, making it one of the world’s most iconic watch families to this day.

In the 1980s, Casio’s digital watches not only helped with everyday timekeeping but also offered features like calculators, alarms, and phonebook storage. The Databank series, for instance, allowed users to store phone numbers and other information on their watches. These types of innovations consistently proved that Casio was always a step ahead of its competitors.

The next milestone was the introduction of Tough Solar technology, which enabled solar-powered operation for watches. From the 2000s onward, Casio increasingly focused on eco-friendly solutions, and solar-powered watches continue to play an important role in the company’s lineup.

As time progressed, Casio entered the smartwatch market. In 2016, they launched the Pro Trek Smart series, specifically designed for outdoor activities, equipped with GPS, an altimeter, and a barometer.

At the same time, Casio did not overlook the premium segment. The Edifice and Oceanus (primarily Japan domestic models) series were designed for motorsport enthusiasts and lovers of elegance, offering refined solutions by combining analog and digital technologies.

In my opinion it is a very important brand as they offer a wide variety of watches for everybody’s wallet from cheaper models up to the very expensive ones. After all a watch doesn’t have to be expensive, the most important is to enjoy it and never get bored of looking at it.
