Christopher Ward C1 Jump Hour XV: 15th Anniversary Limited Edition

Christopher Ward is marking 15 years since one of the most important watches in its history with the new C1 Jump Hour XV Limited Edition.

Back in 2011, the brand introduced the C9 Jumping Hour Mk I, featuring the JJ01 — Christopher Ward’s first in-house complication. Now, 15 years later, that idea returns in a limited run of just 300 pieces, combining the character of the original with the more refined finishing we’ve come to see from the brand’s Atelier collection.

And if you remember the original C9, there are some familiar details here.

The dial features the same concentric guilloché pattern radiating from the centre, along with black Roman numerals on the jumping-hour disc and an outer Arabic minute track. Christopher Ward has, however, given the design a more modern and elaborate treatment.

The guilloché pattern is produced using a custom stamping tool created with a femtosecond laser, allowing the brand to reproduce the original design with greater depth and detail.

As Jörg Bader, Director of Product at Christopher Ward, explains:

“We used a femtosecond laser to create a custom stamping tool to make the dials. This technology has enabled us to recreate the iconic design with a deeper, more detailed pattern, showing the benefit of all our gained expertise over the last 15 years.”

Sitting around it is a multi-faceted trapezoidal chapter ring, with a brushed sunray finish on top and polished sides, adding another layer of texture to the dial.

There’s also a nice little nod to the original beneath the hour aperture, where another sunray-finished surface sits underneath the jumping-hour display.

The minute hand retains the shape of the 2011 original but is now finished in blue. It also gets a more elaborate treatment, with a brushed upper surface and polished facets on either side. It’s a small detail, but one that should make the hand catch the light nicely.

At the centre of the watch is the JJ01 calibre, developed by Johannes Jahnke, Christopher Ward’s first Technical Director. The system uses a Sellita SW200-1 as its base, with a proprietary jump-hour module adding 36 components.

The clever part is how the jump is achieved. Rather than releasing all the stored energy at once, the module gradually draws power from the mainspring throughout each hour. This helps reduce the effect on the movement’s amplitude and maintain accuracy.

The 39mm Light-catcher case measures 13.10mm thick and 47.33mm from lug to lug, with polished facets and brushed sections running along the lugs. A box-domed sapphire crystal sits on top, keeping the overall design fairly close to the proportions of the original while giving it a more contemporary feel.

Turn the watch over and there’s another nice bit of detail. The caseback, inspired by the C1 Jump Hour Mark V, shows the 12 stops of the jump-hour wheel alongside the 60 markers representing the minutes. Fine polishing and heavy sandblasting are used to create contrasting textures that echo the finishing on the dial.

The C1 Jump Hour XV is limited to just 300 pieces and comes on either a Fine Italian leather strap or Christopher Ward’s Consort bracelet.

For Mike France, CEO and co-founder of Christopher Ward, the new watch is a chance to revisit an important part of the brand’s history. The original C9 Jumping Hour remains part of his own collection, and he sees the new model as a way of celebrating both that watch and how far Christopher Ward has come since 2011.

“The C9 Jumping Hour remains a very special part of my own collection. It marked a very special moment in Christopher Ward’s development, as our first in-house complication, and an early demonstration of what we could achieve technically. Fifteen years on, revisiting its distinctive character through the greater refinement and watchmaking capability we have today felt like a fitting way to honour both the original watch and what it came to represent for the brand.”

And I think that sums up the idea behind the C1 Jump Hour XV quite nicely. It isn’t simply a modern reissue of the C9. Christopher Ward has taken the design that started this part of its story and used 15 years of experience to give it a more refined, contemporary execution.

My thoughts on this release

I have to admit, I really like the idea behind this one. Jump-hour watches are already a bit unusual, and bringing back one of the watches that helped establish the brand’s technical ambitions makes this more interesting than simply releasing another limited edition.

I was lucky enough to spend a month with the C1 Jump Hour Mk V, and it’s a watch I genuinely loved. That experience probably makes me even more interested in this new version, because from the photos I’ve seen, the C1 Jump Hour XV looks like it carries that same attention to detail and high-quality finishing throughout. Obviously, I’ll reserve final judgement until I get to see one in person, but so far, I really like what I’m seeing.

The 39mm case is also right in my wheelhouse, and the combination of the guilloché dial, jumping-hour display and blue minute hand gives it plenty to look at without becoming overly complicated visually.

What I particularly like is that Christopher Ward hasn’t simply copied the 2011 C9. The important design elements are still there, but the finishing and dial construction have clearly moved on over the last 15 years.

For a watch limited to 300 pieces, the C1 Jump Hour XV feels like a genuine celebration of where Christopher Ward came from rather than just another anniversary number slapped on the dial. And for anyone who remembers the original C9, there’s a nice bit of history here too.
